Have your cake and eat it too...
“The wedding cake has been an important part of the wedding celebration since Roman times. A thin wheat cake, representing bounty, was crumbled over the bride's head to ensure her fertility”. How times have changed!
Not only is the cake a wonderful centre piece at your wedding, it's also a delicious treat to have after dinner as a dessert or with your coffee. I didn't actually realise how much tradition there is surrounding wedding cakes. Fruitcakes with firm white icing (such as marzipan or fondant) symbolise the solidity of marriage and decorations such as horseshoes, rings and doves symbolise good luck.
Traditions such as the Bride and Groom cutting the cake together and feeding the first bites of the cake to each other are still very common. Pieces of cake are usually taken home by guests and it is said that, if the bridesmaid sleeps with a piece of wedding cake beneath her pillow, she may dream of her future husband. (Lana and Jodie - I'll make sure you get plenty of cake to take home with you!)
The top tier of the Cake is normally taken home by the Bride and Groom to eat on their first wedding anniversary. This is also why the top tier is often fruitcake as it stores for a greater length of time.
I am in a very fortunate position that my mother's many talents include decorating and baking cakes. Therefore I don't have to look very far when it comes to picking our perfect wedding cake. However, I did mention to her the other day that – given the fact we are going to be SO busy with everything else that is going on leading up to and on the day of the wedding (and seeing as our cake won’t be able to be done in advance) – if she wanted me to save her some time (and a little bit of stress and pressure), I would buy one if need be. This got me looking around at what was out there...
